Ratings are typical - always check the manufacturer's stated heat rating, which varies by wall thickness. When in doubt, look for a printed microwave-safe symbol on the base.

The three you will meet

PP vs PET vs PS - how they behave under heat

Three plastics cover almost all rigid takeaway. The difference that matters is what happens when they get hot.

  • PET (#1, polyethylene terephthalate) is a cold-use plastic - crystal-clear rigid clamshells for salads, fruit and cold deli. It deforms in the microwave, so keep anything marked #1 cold.
  • PS (#6, polystyrene) releases compounds under heat and is not microwave safe. Rigid PS is often glass-clear or slightly blue-tinted, versus PP which is cloudier - a quick way to tell them apart on the bench.

Oven-safe is not microwave-safe

Are sugarcane and paper containers microwave safe?

This trips up a lot of buyers, so it is worth stating plainly: eco does not mean microwave.

  • Sugarcane (bagasse) is oven-safe for dry heat and fine for hot food off the pass, but it is not for the microwave - moisture saturates and weakens the fibre wall under sustained microwave heat.
  • Aluminium foil is oven-safe and never goes in a microwave.
  • Paper and cardboard with a PE lining are not microwave safe (the liner can soften); unlined paper is hot-hold, single-use only.

Freezer safe and freezer-to-microwave

Reheat-safe and freeze-safe are different questions. This is what survives the freezer, and what survives going straight from freezer to microwave.

Temper thin-wall PP (small sauce cups) for 2-3 minutes at room temperature before microwaving from frozen, so rapid thermal shock does not crack them.

Reheating safely: vent the lid

Even a microwave-safe container needs the lid managed. A sealed container traps steam and pressure builds fast, which pops lids and can balloon thin walls. Three rules keep it clean: vent or remove the lid before heating; if the lid snaps shut, open one corner first; and keep foil-printed or metallic lids out of the microwave entirely. A loose cover - a microwave-safe plate or a sheet of paper towel - beats a locked lid every time.

Getting containers right for meal-prep and aged care

For dark kitchens and meal-prep services, the customer reheats a sealed meal at home, so the obligation is on you: source PP (#5) containers, mark the microwave symbol on the lid, and include a brief reheat note. For aged care, meals are reheated in institutional microwaves before service, where container choice feeds directly into food-safety and HACCP compliance - PP rounds or compartment trays rated to 120 degrees are the standard.
